Why I Love This Smoothie
Using a combination of berries (strawberries and blackberries) makes this healthy smoothie taste like a sweet treat. Banana and yogurt make it a creamy texture and adding milk of your choice (cow milk, oat milk, almond milk or coconut milk are all great choices) helps adjust the consistency of the smoothie. Three kinds of fresh fruit along with the protein from milk and yogurt make this a perfect, healthy breakfast.

Recipe Ingredients
This healthy strawberry blackberry banana smoothie recipe comes together fast with just these few ingredients. Read on to see how you can customize this smoothie recipe too!
- Fruit - For this smoothie of banana, strawberries and blackberries, ripe fruit is the best and adds natural sweetness. Any fruit will do, but the riper your fruit, the sweeter and more flavorful your smoothie will be. Starting with cold fruit makes the tastiest smoothie so pop fresh strawberries, blackberries and peeled, chopped banana in the freezer (my favorite) or fridge the night before. If using store-bought frozen fruit, just keep it in the freezer until ready to use.
- Yogurt - Anything from full-fat to fat-free or vegan yogurt will work great. Plain or Greek yogurt can be used interchangeably. The higher the milk fat, the thicker your smoothie will be. Higher milk fat yogurt is excellent for young children and supports their brain growth. For us adults, a 2%-5% yogurt is a good choice. To make vegan smoothie, use your favorite plant based yogurt in place of dairy yogurt.
- Milk - Like the yogurt, you can use anything from fat free to full fat milk. Plant-based milk like soy milk, almond milk or any other unsweetened or lightly sweetened vegan milk works just as well. You can adjust the amount to control how thick or thin your smoothie is too.

Strawberry Love
I LOVE strawberries and if you do too, I've got some other, super tasty recipes. Strawberry Rhubarb Oatmeal Muffins are my most popular muffins and for good reason. These are super moist, tart and sweet and great for breakfast or a snack. Ultimate Strawberry Rhubarb Shortcake is an easy and luxurious dessert and Strawberry Coulis makes every dessert AMAZING!
Smoothie Variations
The best part of a great smoothie recipe, is the ability to change up individual ingredients for a fresh flavor every day of the week. Include a creamy element (frozen banana and/or yogurt), a flavor (fruit or nut butters) and a liquid (milk, mylk, fruit juice or even water).
Add a little honey or maple syrup if you like a sweeter smoothie. For a colder and more refreshing smoothie, add a couple of ice cubes to the ingredients in the blender.
You can also add in some healthy ingredients like greens, seeds or protein powder, just don't overdo it or your smoothie won't taste as delicious.
- Make A Smoothie Bowl - Make sure all fruit is frozen and swap milk for equal amount of extra yogurt to make your smoothie extra thick. Pour it into a bowl and garnish with your favorite toppings. I love fresh blackberries, mint leaves, slivered almonds or other nuts, seeds and shredded coconut. Slice bananas and strawberries are great too.
- Peach Mango Smoothie - Swap out 1 cup each of peach and mango chunks for the berries. This was my very favorite smoothie flavor when I was pregnant!
- Banana Chocolate or Banana Nut - AKA the Funky Monkey. Use all bananas in place of the berries and add in a scoop or two of Nutella, peanut butter, cashew butter or almond butter. Use yogurt and milk as per the recipe.
- Extra Healthy Smoothie - Add 1-2 tablespoons of flax seeds, hemp seeds (hemp hearts) or 1 tablespoon of chia seeds. Adjust dairy or plant milk as needed for a drinkable consistency.
- Green Smoothie - Swap out the berries for an extra banana and 2 cups of leafy greens like kale or spinach. Blend up and enjoy the extra hit of vitamin C and K.
However you choose to enjoy your smoothie, if you stick to the recipe or one of the variations listed, you will be enjoying excellent health benefits. These all contain lots of vitamins, minerals, protein and fiber and are a great breakfast on the go for kids and adults alike.
Step-by-Step Instructions
This strawberry blackberry smoothie is the perfect way to start your day. Just scoop your ingredients right into the bowl of your blender and press start. Save a few berries or banana slices to garnish the top of your smoothies.
Step 1. Add yogurt, milk, bananas and then berries to your blender.
Step 2. Process on high (or use the smoothie setting if you have one) until it is creamy and thick. If you don't have a smoothie setting, and your blender is having a hard time with blending up frozen fruit or ice cubes, pulse it a few times to break up the big chunks before carrying on to blend.
Smoothie To-Go
Want to take your strawberry banana blackberry smoothie on the road? Pop it in a mason jar or insulated travel mug with a large drinking spout or leave the lid off for easy drinking. If you like a straw, use the wide diameter reusable straws often sold to use with bubble tea.
For extra fun, freeze the smoothie in popsicle molds for a healthy, pre-made treat in the summer.
Expert Tips
Start with cold ingredients. Having your fruit frozen gives an extra thick and refreshing smoothie. While you can add a few ice cubes if using fresh fruit, it can end up watering down your smoothie. Pop the berries and chopped banana for your smoothies in the fridge or freezer the night before (or buy frozen fruit) for the most satisfying smoothie.
A cold smoothie with frozen fruit will be a nice thick smoothie. Made with fresh fruit, you will have a thinner smoothie. Both are good and depend on your personal preference.
