Top Salad Making Tips
A great salad is all about balance. Fresh greens, something hearty (fibre and/or protein), a bit of crunch, and a dressing that ties everything together. This template walks you through each of those elements so you can confidently build salads that feel complete and nourishing.
- Use a large bowl. When ingredients have room, they toss more evenly, and every bite gets a little bit of everything and an even amount of dressing. For make-and-take salads, use a large lidded jar or Tupperware container that leaves a bit of room to shake it up well after dressing. It is a small detail, but it makes a big difference.
- Use fresh, crispy greens and other ingredients. Fresh tastes better.
- Bring your salad to life with chopped fruits and veggies! Roasted vegetables like sweet potato or delicata squash add warmth and sweetness, while raw vegetables such as bell peppers, cucumber, or carrots keep things crisp. Thinly sliced red onion or green onion adds a little bite to balance richer ingredients.
- Add protein to turn your salad bowl into a complete meal. Hard-boiled eggs are a classic, easy option. Cubed, crumbled or grated cheese is one of my favorites and grilled chicken, shrimp, salmon, chickpeas, or tofu are delicious, too.
- Garnish! This is the fun part. Nuts, seeds, something briny or funky. A little blue cheese goes a long way and pairs especially well with roasted squash or sweet potato. Anchovies are lovely with tomatoes or arugula. Olives, seeds, or a handful of croutons will totally elevate your salad, keeping every bite interesting.
- Dress it. Great salad dressings do not need to be complicated. A simple mix of olive oil, vinegar or citrus juice, salt, and pepper is often all you need. Alternatively, start with plain yogurt and a little mayo flavored with citrus, salt, pepper and herbs. The printable includes an easy dressing ratio so you can make just the right amount every time.
This printable is also ideal if you like to plan ahead. Use it alongside your weekly meal plan or incorporate it into your own salad menu templates. By rotating ingredients from each category, you can enjoy salads several times a week without getting bored.
It is especially helpful for busy weeks when you want quick lunches that still feel fresh and intentional.
